01

How this world was made

The world is procedurally generated from seed 888881851051951300 inside the exact Better Adventures Plus 1.21.11 profile listed below. The site was selected by exploring this generated world for a broad Arid Highlands landscape whose terrain and atmosphere preserve the high-desert character of the historical work. It is not a downloaded map and the field is not prebuilt.

The seed alone will not reproduce the same terrain in unmodified Minecraft. Terrain and structures are materially altered by the profile, including Tectonic, Terralith, Structory, Amplified Nether, Nullscape, and additional structure packages. Reproduction requires the same Minecraft version, loader, mod versions, and configuration.

Visual changes do not replace Survival rules. Complementary Reimagined is the active shader; resource packs alter presentation. Mining, crafting, hunger, damage, hostile mobs, weather, and material costs remain part of play.

01.a

One fixed climate amendment

Before Transmission 001, precipitation was enabled for Terralith's Arid Highlands biome. Terralith 2.5.14 defines terralith:arid_highlands with has_precipitation: false. That setting makes both rain and naturally generated lightning impossible, even when Minecraft's wider Overworld is experiencing a thunderstorm.

The selected terrain is the procedural environment that most closely preserves the arid highland character of Walter De Maria's The Lightning Field. The historical work occupies an arid landscape in which lightning remains possible. Retaining an absolute software prohibition would make the awaited event impossible because of a biome flag rather than because of chance.

This remains a permanent, world-wide biome rule for every Arid Highlands area in the canonical seed. Before September 8, 2026, it did not start, schedule, lengthen, accelerate, target, or guarantee any weather event: rain and lightning arose solely from Minecraft's unaided weather engine. Those historical transmissions retain that description.

Historical theoretical cadence: under Minecraft 1.21.11's unmodified weather timers, a clear interval lasts 10–150 minutes of active world time and rain lasts 10–20 minutes. Thunder is governed by a separate timer. The prior rule produced an expected overlap of approximately 1.4% of active world time—roughly one effective storm per six active hours, with no maximum wait. This calculation describes the superseded weather authority, not future synchronized transmissions.

Environmental Amendment 002 / regional weather coupling

Adopted September 8, 2026, this prospective amendment couples the Minecraft Overworld to NOAA/National Weather Service conditions for a public regional proxy at Quemado, New Mexico. Dia transports visitors from its Quemado office, but the artwork's exact coordinates are not presented here. The feed is therefore identified as a regional approximation, never an exact on-site instrument.

Public proxy
Quemado, New Mexico / 34.3434, −108.4959
Assignment source
NOAA/NWS hourly point forecast / grid ABQ 28,94
Context observation
Nearest NWS station, with station identity, time, and distance retained
Refresh / freshness
Every five minutes / maximum accepted fetch age 20 minutes
Game states
clear / rain / thunder
Failure behavior
No new weather change; stale or unavailable status is recorded

The raw NWS condition, its source window, feed health, the deterministic three-state mapping, and the weather actually observed in Minecraft are tracked separately. Unqualified precipitation—or a qualified chance of at least 50 percent—maps to rain. Thunder follows the same threshold. Cloud, wind, fog, heat, and cold remain recorded but map to clear because Minecraft has no equivalent weather state.

The system may assign clear, rain, or thunder. It may not create a lightning entity, choose a strike time or coordinate, target a pole, or guarantee a strike. A future strike is described as Minecraft-engine lightning under externally synchronized regional weather, not as unaided natural Minecraft weather.

Lightning climatology / the measured scale of waiting

Historical frequency is published here as context, not as a forecast. The project calculated a local baseline from NOAA/National Centers for Environmental Information daily National Lightning Detection Network summaries for 2009–2018. The source product counts cloud-to-ground flashes by UTC day in 0.1-degree geographic tiles.

Local sample
Tile centred at −108.5, 34.3 / approximately 9 × 11 kilometres
Ten-year local record
2,581 cloud-to-ground flashes / 297 lightning-active UTC days
Annual local mean
258.1 flashes / 29.7 lightning-active days
July–August local mean
196.5 flashes / 18.8 lightning-active days
Regional comparison
Nine-tile area of approximately 28 × 33 kilometres
Annual regional mean
2,255.4 flashes / 64.3 days with activity somewhere in that area

These are flashes distributed across areas, not strikes on the town, one pole, or the undisclosed physical artwork site. A lightning-active day can contain one flash or many. The local and regional means describe different spatial questions and must not be interchanged. They also do not promise that a transmission—or even a completed field—will encounter lightning.

Ten-year local calculation record
2009
199 flashes / 28 active UTC days
2010

Prospective satellite-lightning translation / not active

No satellite-detected flash currently creates, relocates, or targets lightning in Minecraft. Environmental Amendment 002 assigns only the regional weather state. NOAA's Geostationary Lightning Mapper records total lightning, including in-cloud activity, and is not interchangeable with the historical cloud-to-ground climatology above.

A later real-to-virtual lightning system would require a separate public amendment before activation. That amendment would have to declare the observation product, geographic window, spatial transformation, event grouping, cooldown, uncertainty, failure behavior, and effective transmission. The raw observation and its translated Minecraft coordinate would remain separate ledger fields. A flash could not be redirected toward a completed pole, invented while the feed was unavailable, or erased because the game was closed.

Any such translation must remain isolated from field construction, Walter, Survival inventory, mob behavior, terrain-protection rules, and the Lightning Field Vigil protections. Until that later amendment exists and is verified, Minecraft alone determines whether, when, and where a lightning entity appears inside an externally assigned thunder state.

Prospective observation reference: NOAA/NESDIS GOES-West Geostationary Lightning Mapper. This reference does not indicate that the proposed translation is operational.

02

The construction contract

Before any survey is committed, /lightningfield locate samples complete candidate footprints and returns the best candidate it finds as an exact northwest coordinate. It reports accepted open-biome samples and measured terrain relief without declaring the landscape suitable. At that marker, /lightningfield preview displays all 400 client-side guides without placing blocks or creating a canonical survey. The player may inspect the footprint, run /lightningfield locate again to reject it, or explicitly lock it with /lightningfield survey confirm.

The confirmed survey creates a 25 × 16 matrix of 400 positions at 20-block intervals, extending 480 blocks east and 300 blocks south. The occupied footprint is 481 × 301 blocks. The terrain is not flattened and there is no fixed relief cutoff: suitability remains a human judgment made from the disclosed measurements and preview. The highest surveyed ground receives six iron bars and one unwaxed copper lightning rod. Lower positions receive additional iron bars as required by their elevation. Support height therefore varies while every one of the 400 rod tips terminates on one shared Y-coordinate.

The field software identifies coordinates, displays non-material survey guides, preserves the accepted survey, audits completed assemblies, records the number and coordinates of confirmed rod strikes, and exposes telemetry. An incomplete or incorrect assembly retains its guide; a guide disappears only when the full iron-bar support and lightning rod satisfy the shared tip plane. The markers are client-visible references and place no blocks. The observation shack is marked one grid spacing north of pole 13, at the midpoint of the northern edge.

The player performs the Survival labor by hand. Walter's Ghost is an invulnerable, non-colliding witness. He does not mine, craft, fight, rescue, collect, place blocks, change weather, or build the field. He records mechanical facts and remains still while the player sleeps.

Human / machine

The digital apparatus surrounding Waiting for Lightning was developed with assistance from an AI coding agent. This includes software, telemetry, interface systems, documentation, and technical infrastructure.

The field is not automated. Every act of exploration, extraction, fabrication, transport, surveying, measurement, construction, and placement is performed manually by the artist in Minecraft Survival Mode.

AI may assist in building the instrument. It does not perform the field.

Lightning image and weather sound / installed September 8, 2026

Fractal Lightning 1.0.1 is a client-only MIT-licensed rendering mod for Minecraft 1.21.11. It redraws a lightning entity that Minecraft has already created. It does not create lightning, change weather, select a strike time or coordinate, target a pole, or write project telemetry.

Realistic Thunder v1.0 is an MIT-licensed resource pack that replaces three rain recordings and four thunder recordings. It has no code and cannot create or time weather or lightning. Minecraft 1.21.11 rejected the upstream archive's compatibility declaration, so the project removed its deprecated supported_formats field and aligned pack_format with the upstream-declared minimum of 69. The seven OGG files, sounds.json, and artwork remain unchanged.

ImmersiveThunder: Reforged 1.3.5+1.21.x was evaluated but not installed. Its manifest requires Fabric Loader 0.19.2 or newer; the canonical profile remains on 0.18.4. The loader was not upgraded because that would widen this presentation change across the entire modpack.

These additions do not alter Environmental Amendments 001 or 002, Minecraft's authority over individual lightning entities, construction rules, Survival inventory, mob behavior, terrain protections, Walter, or the Lightning Field Vigil protections.

Incident and correction ledger

Operational failures remain part of the public record. A correction is described as complete only after its relevant test passes; a platform recording that cannot be reconstructed is not silently presented as repaired.

Transmission 006 — Walter collected death drops
Walter's saved inventory preserved all 31 item stacks, but the first restitution routine required floor-supported barrel positions and could not place its two barrels inside the cramped underground base. Walter can no longer collect drops. A wider air-space search plus exact restoration of the verified pre-death level-30 experience state is installed for the next official-world join; the world will write a one-time restitution record when it is applied.
Transmission 007 — delayed gameplay echo
OBS contained one game-window source and no microphone duplication. The observed delay is consistent with an audible browser copy of the live or replay feed returning earlier game sound. Readiness now blocks while a Waiting for Lightning or YouTube viewer is open in a supported local browser.
Transmission 007 — construction index remained at 001/400
Two real completion events and the world state recorded Poles 002 and 003, but the site merged an older Transmission 006 recovery object after live telemetry and hid the newer values. Live data now has authority over historical recovery data; a regression test requires the surveyed 003/400 state and preserves Pole 001's earlier video evidence.
Transmission 007 — YouTube replay discontinuities
The shared relay queue filled when the YouTube destination slowed, dropped encoded packets, and repeatedly reopened OBS's source connection. OBS itself showed no encoder overload. The existing YouTube replay cannot be truthfully reconstructed because no independent master was recorded. The relay now isolates Owncast and YouTube into separate workers, and a synthetic destination-failure test must pass before readiness. Future sessions automatically record an independent local master and preserve it on Google Drive after the stream closes.
Transmission 008 — destination-isolated relay still corrupted YouTube
The Transmission 007 repair isolated the destinations but retained two lossy localhost UDP/MPEG-TS queues. During Transmission 008, the YouTube-side queue overflowed repeatedly and generated packet corruption and 92,953 timestamp-discontinuity reports. That design passed a destination-disconnect test but did not protect a long session from sustained destination backpressure. The damaged platform replay remains disclosed. OBS simultaneously recorded a continuous 2:25:40 independent master with a steady 30 fps stream and effectively zero render lag; the master was retained for corrected archival publication.
Transmission 008 — automatic master archiving failed after capture
The independent master was not lost. The background archiver inherited macOS's restricted service path and could not resolve Node, so it stopped at marker validation before uploading or deleting the 4.7 GB recording. The archiver now has an explicit Node fallback, its deletion-after-Drive-verification contract remains intact, and the retained master entered both restricted Drive preservation and corrected YouTube upload workflows.
Transmission 008 — Logbook omitted a completed replay
The website depended on YouTube's public RSS/channel surfaces plus a manually updated canonical list. YouTube's authenticated API had already sealed Transmission 008, but the public feed remained stale, so the Logbook showed only Transmissions 001–007. The local publication ledger now exposes every sealed published transmission through the telemetry bridge, and the website merges that authoritative feed before using YouTube's public discovery surfaces. A regression test requires Transmission 008 to appear immediately from its sealed record.
Recovery storage — Backup HD failed verification
The mounted external volume had sufficient capacity and was writable, but a non-destructive Journaled HFS+ verification ended with fsck_hfs exit code 8. This was filesystem damage rather than an Intel-versus-Apple-Silicon incompatibility. No transmission master was written to it, and the failed disk is no longer part of the project pipeline.
Recovery storage — verified Google Drive masters
OBS records the active session into a bounded local spool because a file still being written must not be entrusted directly to a cloud-sync path. At transmission close, the controller uploads that master to the restricted Google Drive archive, compares byte size and checksum, writes and reads back a SHA-256 attestation, and only then removes the local copy. PREPARE TRANSMISSION blocks if any prior master remains unverified.
Readiness — recovery evidence no longer depends on Codex
The isolated graphical drill still requires the artist to confirm that the restored world renders and Walter appears, but it no longer requires a conversational confirmation or AI-token expenditure. After F2, a clean save, and complete Minecraft shutdown, the next PREPARE TRANSMISSION run verifies the fresh screenshot, current test directory, client log, Walter join, all-dimension save, clean server stop, and unchanged official world, then certifies the drill automatically.
Website — telemetry fallback caused a black screen
A brief upstream timeout selected the sealed Transmission 007 fallback, whose reduced transmission object omitted two optional display totals. The telemetry panel attempted to format an absent number and crashed the root client render. The fallback now contains the verified totals, every numeric display is defensive, and failed refreshes retain the last verified state. Both the telemetry panel and the complete site now have independent containment boundaries; an already-open tab holding the superseded JavaScript must reload the current public version once.

Documentation pipeline

Owncast is the live origin presented on this site. Completed sessions are relayed to and preserved by YouTube, then indexed in the Logbook. The Minecraft mod writes factual telemetry and an append-only event record. The public diary is derived from those records; empty days, failures, deaths, and periods without lightning are not fabricated or removed.
